Éditions d'Art de Rambouillet - "Pêcheurs Indiens"
W: 183 cm | H: 212 cm
A fine screen-printed reproduction after an original 17th century Gobelins tapestry from the celebrated Les Anciennes Indes (The Old Indies) series, designed after cartoons by Alexandre-François Desportes, based on paintings by Albert van der Eeckhout and Frans Post. These tapestries, woven between 1692–1740, introduced novel and exotic subject matter featuring luxuriant vegetation, Indian figures, and an exuberance of conception that was highly favoured in the royal courts.
The composition depicts a richly detailed scene of Indian fishermen in a lush tropical landscape; the figures are rendered with remarkable precision, surrounded by abundant flora, palm fronds and exotic birds, all framed within an ornamental gilt border characteristic of the Gobelins tradition.
The tapestry is printed on a blend of wool, cotton, viscose and linen, and carries a label to the verso identifying the maker and subject. Éditions d'Art de Rambouillet are world renowned for their faithful reproductions of celebrated antique tapestries. A monumental wall hanging with genuine historical provenance; a piece that brings the grandeur and artistry of the royal French workshops into the contemporary interior.
